Installing scuttlePLUS Administrator

1. Recompile apache (click here for screenshot):
   • Enable mb_string extension
   • Enable GD library
   • Enable FreeType Support
   • Enable CURL
   • Enable OpenSSL
2. Create MYSQL Database
3. Download and unzip the scuttlePLUS files
4. FTP the files to your server
5. Set the following permissions
   • CHMOD the /cache/ sub-folder to 777
   • CHMOD the /logs/ sub-folder to 777
   • CHMOD the /translate/cache/ sub-folder to 777
   • Set permission of conn.php to 777
6. Access install.php and enter MYSQL information
7. Click INSTALL to complete the installation.
8. Clean up server files
   • Delete install.php when done.
   • Change permission of conn.php to 644

Configuring the scuttlePLUS Administrator

You should change the following items immediately:

1. Go to the SETTINGS page and edit your configuration options:
   • Change admin password
   • Enter the email Admin email address
   • Choose to allow or turn off public user registration.
2. Go to the SPAM FILTERS page:
   • Enter additional SPAM filters (optional)
3. Go to the TOKENS page:
   • Edit or create your own tokens

To modify additional config options, simply access the HELP page for more information on each setting.

scuttlePLUS is a our modified version of the Scuttle social bookmarking system. The original scuttle source is located at SourceForge: http://sourceforge.net/projects/scuttle/

scuttlePLUS uses the original Scuttle bookmarking code and adds many enhancements including an Administrator Backend System allowing you to manage multiple scuttlePLUS users, posts and installations.

Administrator Backend

One thing sadly missing from the orginal Scuttle is an administrative backend. When running a public bookmarking site you MUST have an easy way to manage users, posts and other aspects of the site.

In the past if you wanted this, you would have to code it yourself, but no more. We have created a complete administrative backend for scuttlePLUS. It includes everything an administrator needs and then some…

Some of the much needed features we have added include:

Advanced Management Features

• Remote scuttlePLUS Management: This allows the administrator to monitor and manage multiple installations of ScuttlePLUS from one location. This is what I use to handle my network now.

• User Moderation: Allows the administrator to automatically prevent a user’s posts from appearing until it is manually approved.

• Admin Search Feature: Allows administrator to search for specific user, a specific IP, or posts that contain a specific tag; a specific text in post, or a specific title.

• Mass Delete: Allows administrator to delete large numbers of posts that meet specific search criteria. For example, you can find and delete all posts from a specific user, or specific IP. You can also choose to disable these posts instead of deleting them.

• Moderate Posts: Allows the administrator to approve or disapprove posts from specific users before they appear on your site.

• Manage Users: Allows the administrator to view, edit disable/enable and delete current users.

• BAN list: Allows the administrator to automatically ban posts from a specific user or ban posts from a specific IP.

• Post Filter: Allows the administrator to automatically prevent any user from adding a bookmark that contains forbidden words. Such as porn or gambling keywords.

• Global Throttle Control: This allows the administrator to set a maximum number of posts any user can make in X number of hours. Once a user hits this limit the user will not be able to add additional bookmarks.

• Post Alert: if a user attempts to post more frequently than the throttle settings allow, the administrator will be notified via email so that they can choose which action to take.

Advanced SEO Features

• Auto Ping Feature: Automatically pings new pages of your site for the period that you set.

• Contextual Ad Support: Allows you to easily add or modify contextual ads (such as Google Adwords) on your site.

Server Requirements

• Linux server running Apache
• Apache compiled with Curl, OpenSSL and mb_string extension enabled
• PHP 4+ with safe mode turned off
• Mysql version 4 or higher
